Support Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and odds are you or someone you know has a loved one that has been affected by this disease.  In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, brands are offering consumers special edition products and donating proceeds to the support of cancer research and a future cure.

Not only do these products promote a worthy cause, they honor the strength, beauty and resilience that is within every woman. Support Breast Cancer Awareness this month by purchasing one of the following pink products or making a donation to cancer research.

-Fiat has issued 500 “Pink Ribbon” models this month. For every model purchased, the company will be donating $1,000 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation with a minimum donation of $50,000 being made.

-Bare Necessities has a special edition line of pink bras that are available this October, but they aren’t limiting their donations to only the pink bras. For every bra purchased in the month of October a donation of $0.25 will go towards The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

-Lacoste‘s “Pink Croc Collection” features signature Lacoste items. Throughout October, the company will donate 10% of the proceeds of collection purchases towards The Breast Cancer Research Fund.

-Purchase any items   between September 1 and November 1 at Forever 21 from their   “The Courage Collection“, and 10% of the proceeds go to The Susan G. Komen for the Cure, with a guaranteed minimum of $25,000.

- Lord & Taylor has launched Project Pink, a series of special events  and programs, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at its Fifth Avenue flagship  for the month of October. Project Pink offers customers access to a number of exciting events for a cause, including a cocktail party with Lauren by Ralph Lauren  and Glamour magazine, a personal appearance by Oscar de la Renta and a fashion  presentation of Swarovski embellished dresses narrated by Avril Graham of Harper’s  Bazaar. These events run from October 6 to October 13.

-Stila Cosmetic‘s  “Positive and Pretty Palette”, valued at $62, is retailing for just $14 . Proceeds go to The Foundation for Living Beauty. Their mission is to empower women to reduce their cancer risk, and increase their self-esteem, physical wellness, and emotional stability, after coping with the taxing affects of cancer and chemotherapy.

-Rite Aid is partnering with Revlon and encouraging customers to “Think Pink during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in October. During a month-long ‘œBeauty of Giving’ campaign, fans of Rite Aid’s  Facebook page  can honor someone affected by cancer by sharing their story and entering for a chance to name a new pink shade of Revlon nail polish in their honor.  Revlon is donating $1 from each Rite Aid sale of all specially marked high velocity shades of pink nail and lip products. All donations, up to a maximum of $25,000, will go toward supporting women’s cancer research.

-Swarovski’s Glamour Bracelet  supports The American Breast Cancer Foundation and encourages you to “flaunting your support with style.” These gorgeous bracelets make more than a fashion statement.

Pick of the Week: Beauty

If you pick up one beauty item this week, it should be  Sephora by OPI’s Only Gold For Me  nail polish. I have to admit, I used to be much more creative with my nail polish color choices. The past few years, I had been sticking to red and pink hues. This summer, I thought I was being daring with my neon orange choices and even walked on the wild side at the first signs of fall by lacquering up with Essie’s Licorice (a deliciously dark, black pigment).

When my dark manicure started to look a little less than glam, instead of putting on another coat, I swiped on just one coat of  Sephora’s  Only Gold For Me. It not only extended the life of my manicure, but I received numerous compliments. I love the dark and gold color combo for fall, or even a sparkle of gold polish over a more neutral tone or vibrant red nail color.

At only $9.50 this is a small beauty splurge that can satisfy your desire to incorporate a more flashy edge for fall.  Sephora by OPI’s Only Gold for Me sparkle is also available in a silver, copper and multi color glitter variety as well!

Luscious Lashes

We’ve all had those mornings. You wake up late, and you only have time for your most minimal of routines.  Do you choice to swipe on some lip gloss to accent your pout, dab on some concealer to hide your late start or rouge your cheeks?

For me, I go for my  mascara wand. Without it, I feel half awake. A bold, luscious lash really is magic and helps me get through the day. If I have  to forego  all beauty products, but one, mascara is always my first choice.  I always start with an eyelash curler to open up my eyes, I give the curler a quick blast with my hairdryer to heat it and get a better curl. You can also hold your eyelash curler in your hand to warm it more gradually. The next step is just selecting the perfect mascara, easier said than done.

I’ve gone through my share of top mascara brands. With so many emphasising the blackest black, or biggest curl, here are my top three:

Dior Diorshow Blackout  ($24.50 at Sephora)- Dior’s Blackout mascara is indeed the Blackest of Black mascaras on the market. I LOVE this mascara. It is without a doubt, my favorite beauty product. My lashes transform from timid and lifeless, to bold dark and captivating. I would never dream of going out for a night on the town, date or event without it. Best part, it also comes in waterproof, so you and your lashes can weather any storm. For me, I look for a rich black pigment in a mascara, if you are the same this is your mascara match.

Benefit They’re Real ($22 at Sephora) – I recently discovered this mascara and though Dior still has my heart, it brought something else to the table – a more natural curl. I could swipe this mascara on my  dull lashes and, even without an eyelash curler, they perked right up! This mascara does not come in a waterproof formula, which I was skeptical about – at first. However, I have yet to see a smudge or start crying those nasty black tears, even when my eyes welled up upon learning my best friend was engaged last month.  Plus, it’s nice to not have to scrub your eyes with eye makeup remover to try to ride your lashes of waterproof mascara. If you’re looking for a mascara that will give your lashes a curvaceous look – this is your pick.

Maybelline Colossal Volum‘ Express  ($4 – $6 at your local drugstore)-  Lets face it, we don’t always want to splurge on products that we are restocking in our beauty repertoire. Plus, sometimes you just can’t get to the beauty department and you need to restock at Duane Reade. This is why I love Maybelline mascara! Especially the Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara, which not only lengthens, darkens and curls, it’s reasonably priced as well. Quadruple threat. I want to look like a million bucks without spending it. If that is the case for yourself as well, this is the mascara for you!

What is your one beauty item you can’t live without? If it’s mascara, which brand is your secret lash lengthening beauty weapon?

4 Steps to Makeover Your Look Today

I’ve always secretly wanted to be ambushed on What Not To Wear. Not that I am in need of a makeover by their standards, but sometimes you just want an entirely fresh new look. I have found myself in this mindset lately, in need of a new look. However, I love my style, just need a revamp. I realized, there area a few simple measures you can take to change your whole look and appearance without having to stage a reality show intervention.  Here are a few small tips to give yourself a mini makeover this weekend.

There is nothing geeky about Anne Hathaway’s chic look

Pretty posture – This is one of the easiest ways to give yourself a whole new look and confidence. Whether you are strutting your stuff down the streets of Manhattan or pounding the keyboard at your desk. Make a conscious effort to sit up straight and keep your shoulders back. Having  perfectly polished posture will make you appear taller, more confident and posed.

New do – We are creatures of habit, I rarely switch up my hairstyle (straight, down, boring!)  during the week, unless it is for an event. You don’t need a special occasion to show your tresses some love. If you are really daring, consider going for a completely new cut or color.  If you aren’t willing to get a new cut or dye your locks, simply try a new style. Consider braids, buns or a new twist on the modern ponytail. These styles are all relatively simple and can play up your facial features. Determine your face shape and find a style that best suites you.

Bold frames – Geeky frames are (still) so hot right now! When Anne Hathaway wore oversized dark rimmed glasses paired with a gorgeous Gucci gown, I knew geek-chic was here to stay. I especially love this look for fall. Be daring and try a bold frame in lieu  of contacts or just for fun.

Make up Makeover – Typically stick to the same color scheme when it comes to your lids? Mix it up! Your eye shadow palate is in need of a make over if you have been using the same rotation of shades for the last few months. Though my hair is slacking ,this is a department I like to keep fresh. There are so many luscious, bold and vibrant pigments out there! Not sure where to start, I’d suggest visiting Sephora or Mac as their beauty specialists are always helpful regardless of your eyeshadow expertise.

Does This Look Okay?

I hear this questions often in my office, either coming from a  co-worker who ran  out the door in a rush or from my own lips when I’m having a similar morning. Occasionally, it is even something I will ask a girlfriend when I meet her for brunch, or via the text image I just sent to my best friend in Atlanta while I’m shopping (she often does the same).

I bet even KK often needs some reassurance on her style choices, right?

Moving to the city, I lived alone for one of the first times in my life. Though I loved the solidarity, at times, I missed having easy access to my best friends/roommates.  I missed our impromptu movie nights and dance parties and having someone you could rely on when you locked yourself out of the apartment. Most of all, I missed another set of eyes. I love to mix it up with my closet staples and new trends, but sometimes you just need a reassuring comment from a friend. Someone to assure you that your overplay of stripes makes you look polished, instead of a twisted version of a nautical zebra. Though there are just some trends you can’t pull off and should leave to the professionals. That assessment is often a hard one to make on your own and of yourself.

I thought I had discovered the solve for one of my biggest complaints of living alone. I could start a website and post my questionable style choices online for a fashion forward public to judge (Think Hot or Not, but for outfits instead of physical traits). Meg can attest to this “brilliant” idea that came about during a wildly off beat G chat discussion, in which she made me realize one of the commandments of fashion. Thou shall not wear something you don’t feel 100% confident and yourself in! If you are not feeling confident in your look, you are not going to look confident. Confidence is key to many things, fashion and PR included. Though I am a firm believer in dressing on the edge at times, leave those “questionable” ensembles for a day (or night) out with the girls to test the waters instead of debuting on a first date or day at the office.

However, if you’re like me and still need a little reassurance every now and then, you can check out the below websites that offer such fashion advice. Turns out my “brilliant” idea already exists via these sites:

-Polyvore.com: Here you can post images of a single item, or an entire outfit, then get a thumbs up or down on whether it’s fashionable.

-  Chictini.com: On this website users can vote on whether your outfit is ‘œchic’ or ‘œweak.’

-StyleFeeder.com: This website  is a browser add-on that lets you shop online with friends and get feedback on what they think before you purchase anything.

And remember you are one confident and in control PR girl, lets shoot for more than just “okay”. We are going for fabulous, you don’t deserve anything less. Don’t forget it!

Quick, Work-Ready Fixes for Humid Hair

It’s been a rainy and muggy few days in New York.  A sign that the sunshine-and-heat-wave days of summer are coming to an end.  However, with the cooling weather is also the unpleasant side effect of humid-hair – a curling, limping, frizzing and cow-licking conundrum that affects all hair types.  Not so great when you have client-facing meetings and after-work events to attend to.

Though the in-case-of-emergency hair tie is still a must, I get bored with my slicked back look pretty quickly.  Luckily, some of our favorite ladies in beauty and fashion, The Beauty Department and Cupcakes and Cashmere, have recently posted hairstyles to add a unique twist to our rainy day routine.  Best part?  The messier, the better!

Sneak Peek: Fall Beauty

Though we are still perfecting our sweltering weather beauty routine, stores are stacking their shelves with rich greens, purples and navy’s to welcome in the fall fashion and beauty season.   After the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter show this year, Marc Jacobs described his inspiration for his line full of mystery and metallics:

“We were thinking about obsession, fetishism and we thought about an old hotel, with its chambermaids and the affairs that go on there, the crimes and scandals. And we just wanted to reveal all the amazing creatures who passed through there.”

Sexy. Count us in!   Below are a few of the beauty looks we’ll be stealing for the upcoming season:

Summer Inspired Manicures

The manicure is back in full force, not that it really went away. Keeping your nail beds in tip-top shape has always been a necessity. However, it seems there is more creative license these days when it comes to your manicure. Girls are sporting more than just a bold neon Essie hue for summer.  Everyone from Justin Bieber to now the Kardashians want in on the nail polish trend.

Here are a few summer inspired polish trends that we are loving.

Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere has dubbed these “Mermaid Nails”. I can see why with their whimsical, carefree summer feel. You could play up any color and add some sparkle to just your ring finger nail, to make the color pop.

Ever since I saw Something Borrowed, I’ve been playing with this look. In one scene Kate Hudson’s character is sporting a black french manicure – did anyone else notice this?  Throughout the scene I was fixated on Kate’s nails, more than her character development (okay so there wasn’t really much of that going on in the film to begin with). Opting for a neon hue is the perfect mani for summer. I’d stick to just one shade, but if you are daring, trying to recreate this look featured above.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects, are nail  appliques  made from real nail polish.  These easy to apply nail polish strips come in an array of styles including solid color glitters and neons for those of us looking for a zero dry time, on-the-go manicure solution. The best effect of these nail polish alternatives are that they stay on your nails far longer than traditional nail polish (up to ten days).

What are your nails rocking this summer?

A PR Girl’s Guide to Summer Beauty

As we’ve mentioned a couple times now, we are girls who go for our SPF.  But aside from keeping healthy in the sun, we also like to be sure we’re staying primed and polished in sweltering temperatures.  Though almost every PR girl has to withstand a wicked commute in the summer, us NYC girls have to brave a special kind of torture with the NYC sweatbox subway system.  How is one supposed to keep her face on?

The key here is keeping natural and pretty during the day, while leaving a few areas to build on for after-work drinks or dinner dates.  Below are a few of my favorite (read: tested and approved) beauty products for summer city living.  After applying in the morning, I like to blast a fan or AC for five seconds to set it just before hopping out the door.

  1. Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, $36
  2. Tinted Moisturizer: Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, $42
  3. Concealer:  Bobbi Brown Corrector, $22
  4. Cream Blush: Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blush, $25
  5. Eyeliner: Maybelline Line Stiletto, $6
  6. Mascara: Bare Escentuals Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara, $18
  7. Lipgloss: Ruby Kisses Menthol Lip Salvation, $5
  8. Lip Color: Chanel Levres Scintillantes  Glossimer in Pink Peony, $29
