It’s the Little Things

I made some ambitious goals for myself at the beginning of 2012.  Many of them had to do with making the most of my time, taking some time for myself, and getting inspired to conquer some of the hurdles I faced last year (making continuous improvements to the blog was one of the goals!).

Since I’ve been traveling so much, I have had to push a few of these goals to the wayside.  However, I told myself on January 1 that if I found myself straying from my resolutions, I would NOT give up.  In my mind, throwing the towel in on these goals so quickly would be like dropping your iPhone on the floor, and saying, “Oh well.  I might as well smash it until it breaks.”

Tackling everything all at once seems a little daunting, especially since I’m catching up on a few things at the office this week.  Here are a few of the ways I plan on “giving myself a break” while still making strides with my New Year’s Resolutions:

Catch up with friends over magazines. No reason to leave your friends out of the fun while flipping through the latest glossies.  I have a couple outlets I need to freshen up on for work, and who doesn’t like walking down memory lane with girlfriends and the February issue of Cosmo?  I’m sure those sex tips haven’t changed much since high school.

Get a manicure.  I’m in a very red mood these days, especially with Valentine’s Day coming up.  One of my all time favorite reds is Essie “Fishnet Stockings”.

Throw down the yoga mat.  Since my office moved, we now have a trial membership to Clay in Union Square to use.  I’ll be taking a break from my own fancy gym membership and addiction to the treadmill and  try something new.

Finish my new book.  I just started Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safranfoer on the flight to LA.  I could easily finish it this week if I put my mind to it.

Sit on my couch and indulge in Pinterest.  I’ve told you all many times of my love of Pinterest.  Though this may seem like hours wasted on the internet, I actually find myself inspired after spending time on this new social media site.  Pinterest helped me find my new workout plan, a healthy grocery list, even outfit ideas for work events.

What have you been doing to reach your 2012 goals this month?

Come Fly with Me: Sundance

I’m currently en route to Sundance for work. This is my third trip this month, and though I’m getting a little tired of living out a suitcase, I’ll admit I’m extremely excited. Not to mention, I’m getting pretty good at living out of a suitcase.

Apparently at Sundance, it’s par for the course to live on sweaters and leggings. Here are a few of the other items I was sure to pack for the celebration on the slopes:

  • Sequins
  • Static guard
  • Extra moisturizing lotion
  • Five different sweater choices
  • Lace up boots
  • All trip information saved on TripIt application

I’ll be reporting from Sundance tomorrow. Be sure to follow us on @nycprgirls for some  pictures and tweets!

nycPRgirls New Year’s Resolutions

2011 has been quite the year for us.  It seems like just yesterday we were huddled on Adrianna’s couch, nurturing a seed of an idea, and now nycPRgirls is over 6,000 followers strong.  We really could not give enough thanks to you, the readers and tweeters, for encouraging the conversation and giving support to one another.

There are many changes ahead, but we couldn’t be more excited for 2012.  Here are a few of our resolutions for the upcoming year:

  1. Snag the perfect morning show placement for a client
  2. Take work friends to drinks every few weeks
  3. Treat ourselves to at least two manicures a month
  4. Make a new best friend at a magazine editorial department
  5. Try to finally squeeze in a facial
  6. Work on a killer new business pitch from start to finish
  7. Knock some things off our New York bucket list (and add a few more)
  8. Save up for that handbag/killer heels/drop-dead-gorgeous dress that’s been hogging Pinterest space
  9. Keep writing/blogging/tweeting/tumbling/pinning/google-plusing
  10. Sit back and appreciate life’s sweetness more often

Happy New Year!

nycPRgirls Gift Guide

In true PR girl fashion, we have left the majority of our holiday gift shopping to the last minute (and the next pay day).  There is a laundry list of people to dote on, and it can be overwhelming (and expensive) if you don’t organize your list straight away.  Below we’ve outlined some of our favorite gifts, keeping a budget of around $50 to each recipient so you can treat yourself to a manicure when this is all done:

For your office BFF: The office girls love beauty products, even if they work in the beauty practice.  This is what Sephora gift sets were made for.  Choose a chic eye shadow palette (we’re currently obsessed with the Bobbi Brown Ultimate Party Palette) or a collection of nail colors like Essie’s Cocktail Collection.

For your managers:  Something classic and not too campy works best here.  Try a nice collection of bath products, like Crabtree and Evelyn’s Christmas Collections, like their Heritage line.  If you know she has been interested in trying to take a cooking or wine tasting class, look for a nice cookbook or bottle of wine.

For your parents: My parents are always the most difficult to purchase for.  Sometimes it works best to invest in an experience rather than a gift.  Has your dad always wanted to tour the Finger Lakes?  Does Mom love the brunch place or spa downtown?  Buy gift certificates or vouchers to treat them to a day of indulgence.

For your brother, best man friend,  boyfriend: If you’ve known the guy in question for a while (if it’s your brother, that’s a yes), a casual watch is always a nice choice.  We like the Timex Original Camper or Adidas Peachtree watches.  I also like giving concert tickets to boys, so long as you’re 100% confident in their taste in music.

For your sister/Real Life BFF: Aside from giving her some fabulous swag from the office, luxe accessories are my favorite for the women in your life (and you get to dress up your best friend – fun!).  The Michael Kors iPhone Wristlet is pure genius, and his Leopard Fringe Scarf is absolutely divine.

PR Girl PRowess: How to Find Your Calling

As we’ve said before, PR is not for the weak of heart.  It takes patience and thousands of hours logged in before you feel you “own” your job.  A large part of that is finding your “calling” within the vast world of public relations and representation.

Public relations may feel like the natural job choice, whether you’ve been in the game for five days or five years, but it can take quite a while to figure out which area of PR you want to focus your career on.  For me, it happened somewhat on accident.  As an intern, I was spread across many accounts in many different areas – beauty PR, consumer brands, magazine and publication representation, even some healthcare.  Having a taste of all these different specialties lead me to my “expertise” today.  Here’s a look into some of the top concentrations within PR, to help you determine where your calling may be:

Beauty PR – Working primarily with beauty brands, makeup artists or haircare.  If you are a product junkie or love women’s magazines and can talk your way through anti-aging regimens and pleat skirts, give Beauty or Fashion a try.  Must LOVE talking to media on a daily basis, learning about and testing beauty products, creative writing for releases.  Must be able to stand beauty awards, industry events, networking and doing giftbags and mailers well into your senior levels.

Consumer brand PR – Similar to beauty, working with large corporations to represent their lifestyle brands, whether that be in sports, food, wine, liquor, toys, video games, you name it. Must LOVE speaking on behalf of a large company, learning the ins-and-outs of your client and monitoring for industry trends.  Must be able to stand client relations, teaching the media about new products, a unique blend of products (one day it could be Nike, the other day it could be Land O’Lakes.  Both special in their own way).

Healthcare PR – Representing healthcare agencies or pharmaceutical brands.  Must LOVE feeling as though you are making a difference, helping others and educating the media.  Must be able to stand late nights/early mornings per FDA announcements, intense media monitoring, sometimes stressful client-media relations/crisis

Fashion/Entertainment PR – Representing a celebrity, fashion house or entertainment business to the national and short lead media.  Write and speak primarily on behalf of your individual client, whether that’s Brad Pitt or Marc Jacobs.  Must LOVE crazy days, spontaneity and whirlwind lifestyle.  Must be able to stand laaaaate nights, admin tasks, celebrity requests.

Financial PR – Similar to healthcare, representing a financial firm to the national media, in times of crisis and in times of prosperity.  Must LOVE a regimented schedule, tactical writing and planning, crisis management.  If you are a Type A (as I am, I swear Financial PR was my second calling!), Financial might be the best PR for you.  Must be able to stand sometimes dry writing or program development, pushy or just-plain-mean media.

Fashion Friday: Baby It’s Cold Outside

The temperature has sufficiently dropped over the past few days, and the streets of New York are quickly filling with hoards of black coats, scarves and boots. While each of us owns the basic (and necessary) black coat, there are a few fashionable touches you can implement to be sure you share your diva side on the snowy streets.

Choose bright colored gloves – Maybe not bright blue, unless you want to look like a member of blue man group.   Leather ones will stand the test of time.   I like Calvin Klein Logo Plaque Leather Gloves in bright pink.   Just don’t forget them in a cab.

A chunky, ‘statement’ scarf – Color and texture are important here. Gorgeous neon colors and patterns pop under black.   Try Charlotte Russe’s Chunky Knit Scarf, or Steve Madden Shabby Sheep Space scarf.

Boots that are practical, and cute – Though they serve their purpose on the ski slopes from which they came, Uggs are not practical in the wet, melty, mush that is New York City winter.   I have a pair of Timberland (yes, Timberland) lace up snow boots that I LOVE, and continuously get compliments on.   Try Timberland Women’s Earthkeepers Mount Holly Tall Leather Zip Boot for a similar look.

Finally, a festive topper – I still have a knitted hat with a faux fur pom pom that I love.   New must-have? Super-fun fuzzy fur earmuffs.   I’m planning to add shopbop’s Bop Basics fur earmuffs to my Christmas list:

Tommy Ton: On the Street for Fall

We’ve had a bout of weird autumn weather here in New York.   Other than the small snow storm that rocked Halloween, it’s safe to say we’ve had a mild fall season.   With the temperatures just starting to dip below 50 degrees, I’m hurriedly looking for winter fashion inspiration without falling victim to the New York staple of all-black ensembles (as chic as that can be!).   As always, my favorite man-on-the-street photographer Tommy Ton has come through with beautiful photos of covet-able winter looks.

Pick of the Week – Hunter Boots

Prior to moving to New York, my shoe collection consisted of flip-flops, sandals and wedges. I maybe had one pair of boots that I wore on the one slightly chilly day once a year. As my boot collection continues to grow there is one pair of boots in particular I could not live without, Hunter  rain boots.

My first snow experience in the city I was in a pair of leather Cole Haan boots, trekking through the snow and the slush, thinking there had to be a better way. To say I was naive to dressing for snowmageddon would be an understatement. Leather boots were just so unpractical for snow, and rain boots. Really? Did I want to spend my entire winter slushing  around in plastic rain deterrent material boots? That didn’t seem like it exuded the polished, chic NYC look I was trying to pull off.

Thankfully, it didn’t take long for me to discover Hunter, the stylish alternative to the yellow rain boots of your childhood. Hunter rain boots  come in a variety of vibrant and neutral colors that help you beat the winter weather while still looking pulled together.

After all, if you are going to have to wear a pair of rain boots all winter, it shouldn’t cramp your style. So if you are moving to NYC and experiencing city snow living for the first time, I highly recommend investing in a pair of Hunter boots!

What a PR Girl Still Wishes She Could Do…

While the PR girl is absolutely multi-talented and supremely knowledgeable, there are a few certain everyday tasks or trends that for whatever reason, we have a hard time with while other girls seem to master.   I, for one, can not work the chic, just-got-out-of-bed wave (it looks like I fell in a lake and let the pond scum dry in my hair, I swear).   A cannot keep the dates of the month straight (despite having a fabulous day calendar).   For girls who can score a placement in a national publication or daytime talk show, we’re a little bit challenged in some areas.

Lately I’ve been looking everywhere for inspiration to lead a little bit more of a glamorous life.   Here are a few of the items I just WISH I could do:

  • Rock more jewelry than my every day chunky watch and bracelets
  • Enjoy blockbuster movies without analyzing the product placements within each scene
  • Pull off multi-colored eyeshadow
  • FINISH A BOOK!
  • Perfect the puposefully-messy bun without it turning into a ponytail at the end of the day
  • Get to the gym BEFORE work
  • Run in a pair of heels without tearing up the heel/falling on my face/scuffing them up
  • Write thank you notes, not just emails
  • Give myself frequent manicures
  • Remember to wear lip gloss
  • Don a statement jacket, like Blake’s above

What do you wish you could master to take your inner PR Girl up a knotch? Tell us at @nycPRgirls
