Last night, M and I were invited to speak at a NYU PRSSA meeting. Beyond exploring the campus, we got to sit down and answer questions from both NYU students and students from FIT’s PRSSA.
It was great meeting driven students eager to learn more about the PR industry and New York City living in general. Below are a just a few questions that were asked.
- After graduating, what should I expect as a starting salary? This is such a good question – yet so hard to answer. It’s definitely a case by case basis, but M and I agreed you can expect the average starting salary in New York City to be around $32K.
- What do you look for in an intern? Someone who is proactive and responsive. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as an intern and close the loop on assignments. Going above and beyond does not go unnoticed. It’s important to stand out.
- What should I do now as a college student to prepare for my PR career? Beyond getting as much internship experience as possible, do your PR homework and exercise your interests. Consider starting a blog about a topic that interests you and stay on top of the news/social media. Also, get involved in your schools PRSSA. It’s a great way to meet people with your same interests and gain leadership skills.
