Stuck in PR Job Search Limbo

Yesterday, we received an email addressing a common issue many of you might be facing. What do you do when you have yet to hear back from an employer when it will also determine your living situation?

I interviewed for an internship for fall late May. There was a lot of back and forth as to when I would hear back from them, but finally they told me they would have an answer by July. I still have not heard from them and must withdraw from classes and housing at my current university as well as find a place to live in NYC.

I followed proper protocol– sent thank you notes, followed up with phone calls, emails, etc. As I’m sure you can understand, this is very  frustrating. I don’t want to rush them and risk not receiving this wonderful opportunity, but I do need an answer and soon! Any advice you could give would be wonderful.

You’ve done everything you can to show your interest with emails and calls and haven’t heard back. Since you’re stuck in a hard place and there is some urgency, the best option for you at this point would be to leave an honest, personal voicemail briefly explaining your situation without sounding too aggressive and pushy. The employer wants to know that you’re willing to take the job and can give you a better answer regarding the status of the position once they understand the situation you’re in. Hopefully they will give you a more specific answer instead of the brief, sometime in July.

If you still aren’t having luck, it might be time to look into other internship options. Even though it’s July, there are PR firms still looking  to hire interns. You never want to put all of your eggs in one basket, even if it’s the one internship you’ve been dying for. If anything, you’ve created a relationship with that employer and can get back in touch with them the next time the internship is open. Even better, you’ll come back to them with more experience underneath your belt.

Have you ever been stuck in PR job search limbo? How did you get out of it?
